America Recycles Day is November 15

Tuesday, November, 15 is America Recycles Day – a national initiative to encourage recycling and local recycling events. County Waste & Recycling of Cairo supports recycling and encourages everyone to add one new recycling habit to their day.

Locally, County Waste supports recycling efforts and encourages people to take advantage of local recycling opportunities.

Mindfulness, local, state and national efforts like these are making a difference – today the Environmental Protection Agency reports that Americans recycle about 34 percent of the waste they create. That’s not bad and it’s much better than the 6.2 percent recycling rate from 50 years ago.

Let’s continue this good trend.

On America Recycles Day, let’s all take a minute to challenge ourselves to take one action that may lead to better long-term recycling habits.

Here are some ideas:

  • Remember, electronics are not allowed in any container because they are banned from New York landfills.   Read the special electronic recycling guidelines.
  • Buy bulk rather than individually wrapped items. You will probably save money and you will surely use less packaging material.
  • Before tossing out building materials, consider donating them to Habitat for Humanity Restore.
  • Check out recycling options for compact florescent light bulbs (CFL) containing mercury, and batteries. It’s all recyclable but can’t be placed in the landfill. Local businesses that sell these products often have in-store recycling services.
  • Make a conscious effort to buy products with packaging that is recyclable. For example, paper egg cartons can be recycled but Styrofoam egg cartons cannot.
  • Use reusable shopping bags rather than plastic bags provided at the checkout. To make it easier to remember, store the reusable bags in your car.
  • Share information your new recycling habit with your friends and family and challenge them to take action!

Check out the America Recycles Day site for ideas and tips, and a handy toolkit to give you everything you would need for an event.
